Can a students science fair project be relevant to real science?  You bet. Last year two students conducted a science fair project that investigated the effect of different smells on whether or not people would agree or disagree with certian questions.  I came across this article of the Effect of Odors on Moral Behavior in my feed reader just the other day.  Perhaps these scientists should have consulted with the students at KMS?
